The Mighty James
Find your way to Belle Isle - a small island in the middle of the James River. In summer you will see families sunbathing on the boulders in the James river, canoeing and tubing. After a small hike around Belle Isle, keep walking past Tredegar Iron Works and make your way to Browns Island. From there, walk across the river on the Potterfield Bridge, esp. pretty in the early mornings and at night.
Take the Canal Walk that starts downtown and is the perfect opportunity to stroll along the water. I also highly recommend doing a Rivercruise Canal Tour. Near the Canal you will also find yourself near the old power plant, now a highlight of murals and cultural events.

Hiking & Biking
Richmond is home to some pretty fantastic trails for mountain bikers, hikers and runners. My favorite trails include the Buttermilk trail and North Bank Trail.
If you are serious about exploring Richmond's nature, be sure to run along the floodwall and check out the Slave Trail - incredible surroundings especially in the early morning.
Thanks to the Virginia Capital Trail you can bike as far as Williamsburg and it's a great route for runners and road-cyclists alike!

Parks
William Byrd Park is not only a lovely neighborhood and spans around three little lakes, but it's close to a number of trails, the amphitheater at Dogwood Dell and the beautiful Carillon. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and a frisbee and enjoy yourself!
Just a stone's throw from Byrd Park is Maymont - a 100 acres park inviting visitors to stroll through the Italian or Japanese Garden, visit the animals at Maymont Farms, take a tour of Maymont Mansion or - during summer - see a show on the grounds!
Forest Hill Park is a great escape just South of the River and home to the South of the James Farmers Market happening year around! If you go - and you should if you're into fresh local produce, pottery, wood work, coffees, sandwiches, juices and flowers - be sure to stand in line for Mrs Yoders' donuts.
